Buying research peptides in the UK: how to tell quality from marketing

Research peptides are sold across a wide quality range, and the gap between a well-characterised material and a nicely branded one is not always obvious from a product page. For UK laboratories buying research-use-only compounds, the useful skill is reading the evidence a supplier provides rather than the copy they write. This guide sets out the checks that separate documented quality from marketing language, so you can compare vendors on facts instead of promises.
Start with a lot-specific certificate of analysis
A certificate of analysis, or COA, is the single most informative document a supplier can give you. The phrase lot-specific matters. A generic COA that could apply to any batch tells you little, because purity and identity vary from one synthesis to the next. Insist on a certificate tied to the exact lot number printed on the vial you receive. It should name the compound, the lot, the test date, the analytical methods used, and the results for each. If a vendor cannot produce one, or offers only a stock image of a certificate for a different batch, regard that as a gap in the evidence rather than a formality.
Check HPLC purity, not just a headline number
Most reputable suppliers report purity from high-performance liquid chromatography, usually reversed-phase HPLC. A figure such as 98 percent by HPLC is common, but the number alone is incomplete without the chromatogram behind it. A clean trace shows one dominant peak with small, well-separated impurities. Ask whether the percentage refers to the main peak area and at what wavelength it was measured. Be cautious of round claims like 99.9 percent pure with no supporting trace, and of certificates that quote a purity figure without naming the method at all.
Confirm identity with mass spectrometry
Purity tells you how much of the sample is a single species. It does not tell you that the species is the peptide you ordered. Mass spectrometry answers the identity question by measuring molecular mass, which you can compare against the expected value for the sequence. A COA that pairs an HPLC purity figure with a mass-spec result, and shows the observed mass close to the theoretical mass, gives you both halves of the picture. Identity without purity, or purity without identity, leaves an open question you should not have to guess at.
Understand net peptide content and salt form
Synthetic peptides are rarely 100 percent peptide by weight. They are usually supplied as salts, often trifluoroacetate or acetate, and they hold residual water and counter-ions. Net peptide content, sometimes derived from nitrogen analysis or amino acid analysis, tells you how much of the labelled mass is actually peptide. A vial marked 10 mg might contain notably less net peptide once salt and water are accounted for. Two vials at the same nominal milligram figure and the same price are not equivalent if one reports net content and the other stays silent. This single line is where a lot of apparent price differences quietly live.
Read pricing as a signal
Well-characterised peptides carry real costs: synthesis, purification, and the analytics described above. Pricing far below the rest of the market usually means a corner has been cut somewhere, whether in purity, characterisation, or quality control. That does not make the cheapest option automatically poor, but it does mean the burden of proof sits with the certificate. If a low price comes with a full lot-specific COA you can verify, the value is real. If it comes with vague assurances and no paperwork, the low number is the marketing.
Watch for vague labelling
Clear labelling is a quiet marker of a careful supplier. A good label states the compound name, the nominal quantity, the lot number, and a research-use-only notice. Vague product names, missing lot numbers, or marketing terms with no defined identity make independent checks harder and should lower your confidence. Storage guidance and a plain statement of what the vial contains are basic expectations, not extras you should feel grateful to receive.
Prefer certificates you can look up
The strongest position a supplier can take is publishing certificates you can find and cross-check yourself, rather than a document that only appears after purchase. What is the difference between HPLC purity and net peptide content?
HPLC purity describes the proportion of the sample that is a single main species, while net peptide content describes how much of the labelled mass is peptide rather than salt, water, and counter-ions. A sample can show high HPLC purity and still have modest net peptide content, so the two figures answer different questions and are best read together.
Do I really need both HPLC and mass spectrometry results?
Together they give the fuller picture. HPLC indicates how pure the material is, and mass spectrometry confirms that the material matches the expected molecular mass for the sequence. A certificate showing only one of the two leaves either identity or purity unconfirmed, which weakens any comparison you try to make between suppliers.
Is a low price always a warning sign?
Not by itself. A low price backed by a full lot-specific certificate you can verify can represent genuine value. A low price offered with vague labelling and no supporting analytics is the situation to be cautious about, because the saving may simply reflect skipped characterisation and quality control.
