Research peptides and UK rules: research-use-only, and what we choose not to stock

PepNex is a United Kingdom supplier of research peptides and related reference compounds. Everything we list is offered on a research-use-only basis, and that single principle shapes almost every decision we make: how we describe the catalogue, how we label each vial, which suppliers we work with, and which compounds we are willing to stock at all. This note sets out that framing in plain terms. It explains what research-use-only means, why these materials are supplied as laboratory reagents, why some substances face restrictions in the UK, and why we deliberately leave certain classes off our shelves. It is written to be clear rather than promotional, and it is not legal advice.
What research-use-only means
Research-use-only is a statement of intended purpose. It signals that a compound is supplied as a laboratory reagent, meant for in-vitro work and controlled scientific study by qualified researchers and organisations. It is not offered for consumption by people or animals, and it is not presented as a product for any veterinary or clinical setting. Purpose matters here as much as chemistry. The way a material is described, marketed, and packaged is part of what determines how it is regulated. A molecule sold for laboratory characterisation sits in a different category from the same molecule prepared, licensed, and packaged as a finished medicine.
That distinction is not a marketing device. It reflects a real line in how compounds are handled and controlled. Keeping our language accurate on this point is one of the simplest and most important things we can do, and it is why our wording stays consistent across every product page.
Why we describe vials as laboratory reagents
Every product page and every vial we ship carries the same short statement:
For laboratory research use only. Not for human or veterinary use.
We keep this wording consistent because it is accurate, and because it protects the boundary between a reference chemical and a licensed medicine. Licensed medicines in the UK go through evaluation, manufacturing controls, and marketing authorisation overseen by the MHRA, the national medicines regulator. The compounds we list have not been through that process, are not authorised as medicines, and are not sold as if they were. Calling them laboratory reagents is simply the honest description of what they are and how they should be handled.
Restrictions in the UK
Several categories of substance are subject to specific controls in the United Kingdom, and the rules differ depending on the material. Some substances are prescription-only medicines, which means they may lawfully be supplied to a person only against a valid prescription. Others fall under separate frameworks, such as controlled-drug legislation or rules covering particular chemical families. A compound can also be entirely ordinary as a laboratory reagent while being tightly restricted once it is prepared and marketed for use in people or animals. The same name can therefore carry very different obligations depending on context.
Because these frameworks overlap and are updated over time, we take published guidance from official sources, including the MHRA and GOV.UK, as our reference point rather than relying on informal summaries or claims made elsewhere. When the guidance is unclear or appears to be shifting, we err toward caution.
What we choose not to stock
Being able to source a compound is not the same as deciding to list it. As a compliance choice, we keep several classes off our catalogue entirely, even where there is clear demand. Two examples make the point:
- IGF-1 and its analogues. Insulin-like growth factor compounds and their variants sit close to categories that attract particular scrutiny, so we choose not to carry them.
- The GLP and incretin class. Compounds in the glucagon-like peptide and wider incretin family are the subject of significant regulatory attention and supply controls, so we leave the whole class off our shelves.
These are deliberate omissions, not oversights. Where a class is closely associated with restricted or prescription-only status, or where the compliance picture looks unsettled, our default is caution. We would rather list less and stay clearly inside the research-use-only lane than reach toward materials that blur it. Removing a compound later is more disruptive than never listing it, so we set the bar before anything goes live.
How we decide what to list
Our listing decisions follow a simple order of questions. First, can the compound be honestly described and supplied as a laboratory reagent for research? Second, does listing it sit comfortably with published UK guidance and the research-use-only framing? Third, is the compliance position stable enough that we are confident today and expect to remain confident tomorrow? If a compound fails any one of these, it does not go on the site.
We also revisit these questions. A compound that was appropriate to list can be withdrawn if the guidance around it changes, and something we declined before can be reconsidered if the picture becomes clearer. The catalogue is meant to reflect the current position, not a decision frozen in time.

Common questions
Does research-use-only mean the compound is low quality?
No. It describes intended purpose, not grade. A material can be well characterised and carefully handled while still being supplied strictly as a laboratory reagent rather than as a finished, authorised medicine. The label is about how a compound may be offered, not about how good it is.
Why not stock every compound researchers ask for?
Because availability is only one factor. If a class is restricted, prescription-only, or sits in an unsettled compliance area, we leave it off regardless of interest. Listing less is a deliberate part of how we operate, and we think it serves customers better over the long run.
Where can I check the UK rules myself?
