Glutathione (reduced, GSH) is an endogenous tripeptide, γ-L-glutamyl-L-cysteinylglycine. It is the principal intracellular low-molecular-weight thiol and functions as a redox buffer, serving as a cofactor for glutathione peroxidases and glutathione S-transferases and participating in thiol-disulfide exchange (GSH/GSSG). Its γ-glutamyl bond is a non-standard peptide linkage.
