SS-31 (elamipretide) is a synthetic aromatic-cationic tetrapeptide of the Szeto-Schiller class, structure D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH₂, where Dmt is 2′,6′-dimethyltyrosine. Its alternating aromatic and cationic residues drive accumulation at the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it associates with the phospholipid cardiolipin; research describes preservation of cristae architecture and electron-transport function. It contains a D-amino acid and a non-standard residue.
